Halfway during the concert Beth Hart starts telling about the contest on this website. Fans could vote for their favourite song and by voting they had a chance on winning a Meet&Greet that would take place directly after the show. She walks up to the drum stage and grabs the yellow basket, which holds hundreds of papers with potential winners. Beth knows she has to draw ten, but looses count at some point. Ultimately she succeeds in drawing ten names and also pronouncing them, which is pretty hard for an American. The fans are loving it and the happy winners shout and jump from joy when they hear Beth Hart call their names. There is no response from the crowd at two names. Beth asks the fans if they want to tell those people that they have won if they run in to them tonight. Unfortunately it turned out that these two fans were not present at this special night.
The meeting point for Meet&Greet winners is at the merchandise stand. Wristbands are handed to the winners who can all bring one friend. Unfortunately two fans could not be found and after waiting until the last moment, everyone goes downstairs. One floor down is the café exclusively open for contest winners. Also hubby Scott took a fan downstairs whom he recognized from shows abroad.
The doors are closed and fairly soon Beth and band walk in. The band members easily sits down in a corner while Beth sits down with a couple of fans. She talks to them and takes her time for taking pictures, answering questions and giving autographs. In fact so much time that we have to ask her a couple of times to move along to other fans. Because of this special date we unfortunately have only half an hour available to spend with the winning fans.
A few of the lucky winning fans had come to this concert all by themselves and therefore decided to make some fans happy who travelled far to see Beth. This way a Norwegian, Canadian and Danish fan could enjoy the Meet&Greet. There was only one foreign contest winner, a Norwegian fan.
One fan sheds a tear from emotion, while the other is bouncing from happiness. There are talks about fitness, the music, the tour and a lot more. One fan even asks Beth to call her husband who had to stay home to baby-sit their child, and of course she will! One more happy fan and he was not even present. Beth is having a good time.
The band talks a little bit with some friends and a couple of fans, but most of the fans seem to care more for Beth. They are trying to comfort some nervous fans which they appreciate very much.
Cautiously, the fans who have had their time with Beth and talked to her and got their autographs and pictures are asked to leave the room. Then it is finally time for Beth and the band to leave. They would love to start their New Year's party. Sitting in a small tour bus at midnight is not very romantic after all.
Sunday September 23rd 2007 is a special day for the Dutch Beth Hart fans. Today is the album presentation from Beth's new cd "37 Days". Several happy fans can be present at this event and as cherry on the cake, Beth and her band will be signing cd's for the first time after a concert in Holland. Today is extra special for fan Ricardo Verschut. He is the lucky winner of the very first organized Meet&Greet with Beth Hart.
While many fans enter the building of P60, Ricardo is greeted at the merchandise stand by a BethHartMusic representative and a camera crew from Universal Music. After a short meeting, the small group takes the elevator downstairs, where they find a nice, well lit area with a pool table. A little interview takes place after the camera crew has installed their equipment and explained to Ricardo what they are going to do. He appears to be a very nervous fan, which is not unusual. It is not everyday that you get to meet one of your favourite musicians and on top of that a camera is aimed at you! Ricardo willingly answers questions as: "What do you expect of this Meet&Greet?", "For how long have you been a Beth Hart fan?" and "What does BethHartMusic mean to you?".
After this short conversation the crew packs their equipment and the group moves back to the second floor. They all chat a little while longer and then they go their separate ways to enjoy the concert. But not without deciding to meet again at the same place after the show. Because the album presentation is an official occasion, Ricardo will be given more information about the rest of the evening after the show.
Hardly back to reality after a captivating concert, everybody meets back at the cigarette machine near the merchandise stand. Beth, who always needs a little time alone after the show, will be available for the Meet&Greet around half past ten. Ricardo says he is a little less nervous now than he was in the beginning of the evening. Time always goes by slowly when you are waiting, but the time has finally come. Ricardo and his co-worker Jan are allowed to go backstage so they can meet Beth in her own dressing room.
After introducing themselves and receiving a hug from Beth they guys sit down on the couch. Beth sits down on the chair right across from the guys. She immediately starts firing questions: "You guys won a Meet&Greet right? Tell me how that went? Did you have to answer a question or something?". Ricardo tells Beth that he did not have to answer a question, but ask one! Of course Beth wants to know what question that was. He asks Beth his winning question, which Beth answered comprehensively. But then she wants Ricardo to answer the same question himself. Even though he did not see this one coming, the answer did not seem hard: "I would simply look for another job!". Beth and Ricardo chat a little more but everything comes to an end, and the same goes for this Meet&Greet. This is because Beth also has the earlier mentioned signing session to attend to. After Ricardo has gotten the opportunity for a small private signing session he and his co-worker Jan take a picture with Beth and say their goodbyes.
Around the merchandise stand it is still fairly crowded and for a good reason: it is almost time for the signing session! When Beth and her band appear from the backstage area, a thick line of fans form in front of the tables. All those fans have been waiting for an autograph and a picture with Beth. Everything goes pretty easily and after everybody has had their turn the four band mates disappear behind closed doors to enjoy the afterglow of this exciting evening.
Afterwards Ricardo tells us that he has really enjoyed meeting Beth: "What a cool girl! She is very different from the personality you see on-stage. I have met a very clever woman who knows exactly what she wants and what direction she wants to go to. Someone who appears to be so strong, deserves my respect."

Am I The One |
Tonight is the night. Beth Hart's very first New Year's Eve show abroad. And not just anywhere, but at the famous Paradiso in Amsterdam. Especially for the foreign fans it is a shame it is being constructed so you can not really see the outside of this former church. But in the end it is all about the inside, which is where everything will happen tonight.
The official start of the concert is 8 pm. But it is delayed for about fifteen minutes because many fans are still waiting outside to get in. In the mean time Dutch fans and foreign fans are getting acquainted. There are fans present from different European countries like Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Germany, Spain and France. But also from further away: America and Canada.
At about 8:15 pm Beth and Jon finally give in to the screaming of the audience and enter the stage. They start this evening acoustic with "Hiding Under Water". Beth is dressed for the evening in a multicolour dress in which blue is the main colour. Jon also looks good in his olive green suit. A well dressed Tom Lilly and Todd Wolf complete the band after the beautiful a cappella part. They all end the song very powerfully and then "Skin" starts fluently. De fans make sure the band knows how much they appreciate this song after it is played. Beth asks the fans if they had a nice Christmas and a good year. Then she tells the story about the guy who nailed Santa to a fifteen foot crucifix in his front yard with the message: "Santa died for your MasterCard".
The happy up-tempo songs "Lifts You Up" and "Bottle Of Jesus" are played, followed by the previously unreleased rock song "Say My Name". "This song is about ending a relationship", says Beth. The ballad "Soulshine" is played by the whole band. This beautiful cover originally by the band Gov't Mule is from Beth's latest album and obviously is a favourite of this crowd. After the "heroin version" of "Broken & Ugly" it is time for the second cover of this night. Beth herself can not remember the name of the writer of "Angel From Montgomery" at this moment, but luckily the crowd seems to have some music knowledge and you can hear a couple fans calling the name John Prine. Then an American fan holds up a sign that says: "from USA to Amsterdam just to see you".
The single "Good As It Gets" is clearly well known. Right before she wants to start playing the next song Beth remembers that she has another job to do on this special evening. She tells about the contest that was on the website where people could vote for their favourite song. Beth walks to the drum stage and grabs the yellow basket which holds hundreds of names. She draws ten papers and does her best to pronounce the names and cities as well as she can. Now and then she looks over to the side with a sweet helpless look on her face, but she does very well. The lucky winners cheer from happiness when they hear their names. The singer herself is having a blast as well.
After playing the power ballad "Easy" Beth tells the fans that the song she is about to play next has been requested many times the past few years. For some reason she has never done anything with that until "Blame The Moon" ended up in the top 10. Especially the "die-hart" fans are very happy to hear this song. She clearly enjoys herself very much tonight and comes back to an old story. "Who wants to know what a dingle berry is", she asks. The fans raise their hands and scream. The answer is: "A hair hanging out your ass with a piece of shit at the end of it". The crowd laughs hard and the song that goes with the story is played acoustic by Beth and guitar player Jon: "LA Song". Bass player Tom can use the break, looking at his injured hand. After this song he has some work to do because three rock songs follow: "Sick", "Sauce" and "Waterfalls". In the meantime Scott is playing with a stuffed Winnie de Pooh which was handed to Beth earlier.
With a third and last cover Beth ends her set. The amazing song "A Change Is Gonna Come" originally by Sam Cooke, is not unfamiliar to Beth. She has sung this song about a year ago when she was a special guest on the tour of guitar legend Jeff Beck. The tour manager reads all ten winning names once more to make sure they all know that they have won.
When she comes back on stage, Beth sits down at her piano and says she loves coming to Holland and especially the Paradiso. "When I was young I dreamed about making music. And this is the dream", she says. Then she asks the fans what they are going to do for New Year's because she and the band will not be here at that time. Scott walks on stage and says that we have to practice the countdown. Along with the audience he and Beth count back from ten followed by a loud "happy new year". Scott kisses his wife and the fans cheer.
Before she starts the first song of the encore Beth asks the fans what they want to hear since they have time left for only two more songs while there are three songs planned. Her first option is the single "Leave The Light On" and she says that she will definitely play this song after hearing the crowds response. Next she calls an old favourite "Am I The One" and the Led Zeppelin cover "Whole Lotta Love". Actually she wants to play all songs and the fans obviously wants to hear all songs, but unfortunately there is a curfew tonight.
She ultimately starts "Leave The Light On" and Jon accompanies her on electric guitar. To make the atmosphere more intense the fans light sparklers. The band comes in halfway during the song and numerous fans enjoy the touching ballad with goosebumps. As a final song Beth chooses "Am I The One", a very worthy closer of this beautiful New Year's Evening.

As with some other shows this tour Beth and band open with "Face Forward" again. It sounds as if they are marching in the venue; fast and loud. "Easy" is a sad song but luckily Beth manages to cheer up her audience during "Lifts You Up" sung with the intro "I can feel it in the air, hold on yeah, hold on to what you believe". "Bottle Of Jesus" also sounds up-tempo and fun. The 013 venue has a very good light show and a great atmosphere.
"Learning To Live" sounds very special tonight. It starts off with a different piano intro. Although not as drastically new as the blues version of "Broken & Ugly", this adds a fresh touch to the hit single. After this highlight they play a song from the record "Screaming For My Supper"; the political "G.O.P.".
Someone from the audience screams "Say My Name" and it seems as if Beth and band answer this request by playing the song. But it is also on the setlist for that particular moment. What a coincidence. All fans, even the very small ones in front row, are dancing and jumping to this next song. Another favourite is "L.A. Song", and the audience sings along loudly. The band has performed this song pretty often during the last tour, but the fans do not mind this at all. They also like the fact that Beth is so talkative during this show. Many songs are introduced with stories, including "Jealousy". "Who gets jealous?", Beth asks. She explains she gets jealous very easily when other women are close to her husband Scott.
Beth does not understand that there are people doing drugs and drinking and get away with it. She can't do that anymore and tells that she envies those people. "Sometimes it feels good being sober and sometimes it feels like this", she says and starts playing "Monkey Back". It's the same version they played before but Beth really hits the piano this time. You can see that Beth and band have grown. That they keep growing shows when they play the new and unfinished song "Sauce". It a song in progress but already sounds much better than the first times they played it.
She keeps losing her voice every now and then which worries some people. A little bit insecure she asks the audience if they are still having a good time. She answers the question herself: "Otherwise you would have thrown rotten tomatoes anyway, right?". The audience cheers and with a big smile on her face Beth starts "One Eyed Chicken". The audience starts dancing again. Because of her voice Beth does not take many risks and therefore sings some parts differently. For example the line "I just can't change" sounds very low. Still the song kicked ass.
Beth is very happy for still being together with the band and tells that she loves her guitar player Jon Nichols very much. But not when he is smoking on stage (joking). They play "Leave The Light On" with the band, Jon Nichols on acoustic guitar. After the well-known single "Good As It Gets" they leave the stage. Although the fans want more they also know Beth has to watch her voice because she has just recovered.
Surprisingly Beth returns for an encore and tells a short anecdote about her husband Scott: he stinks. She asks Scott if she can continue the story on which he replies to the soundman: "Can we kill this mic, please?". It makes the audience laugh. Beth still kicks his ass by singing "Stinky Feet" a song not played in a while. Scott takes revenge by holding his (stinking) sock under her nose when she finishes the song.
On Beth's request the band returns to the stage for the next song. After a short band introduction "the Beth way" they play a very touching and perfect version of "By Her". She also lets the audience know Dutch tour manager Jef has recently become a father. Because Beth breaks her guitar string she decides to play a piano song next; "Soulshine", the perfect show closer. But the show is not over yet. Beth wants to keep playing and decides to play "Broken & Ugly" acoustic and "Catalina" with band. Her voice sounds raw and sometimes graspy. She sings like this is her last show, with all she power she has left. The audience leaves satisfied with the fresh memory of this terrific encore. "And she gives it away, and you're fascinated, by her".

Today Beth Hart plays in the north of the country. The big building called "Harmonie" has three rooms. One of them is the Friesland Bank Zaal, which is available for tonight's concert. It holds about one thousand people and the show sold out a little before the day of the show. The doors open but the room is still closed. In front of the two doors that lead to the room a group of fans form a line. One door opens a little quicker than the other, but because the stage is pretty wide a lot of people can still stand up front.
The high room is fairly square. Downstairs you can stand in front of the high stage and upstairs there is a balcony on the three walls where you can sit down. The stage looks suitable for a theatre, but tonight it will be perfectly applicable for a rock concert.
There is always a big diversity in the crowd that shows up at Beth Hart concerts, although this time it seems to be a striking/prominent? older public that is standing in the foyer. There will be a comedy show in the other room tonight, but most people walk in the Friesland Bank Zaal.
A little late, Todd Wolf finally walks on stage. He sits down behind his drum set and starts playing the intro of "Learning To Live". Bass player Tom Lilly follows, after which the main character of this evening walks on stage along with her guitar player Jon Nichols. During this song Jon's guitar strap lets go, but luckily crewmember Peder quickly helps him out. Beth tells the audience that she is very happy to be here and starts playing the upbeat song "Lifts You Up". "Bottle Of Jesus"Â follows with a few mistakes of which the most prominent was probably the lyrics.
After introducing her whole band to the crowd, Todd kicks off "G.O.P.". Beth is obviously in a good mood and she happily jumps around on the stage during "Say My Name". After cancelling her show in Tivoli, it is very striking that she is doing so well today and nails every single note. God, she sounds so old-fashioned good today!
After five songs the guitar player's beautiful red jacket is getting a little too warm for him. Which is not odd when you find out he is wearing two extra layers underneath that. Beth tells the northern fans a little graphic and in a positive way how she feels about her husband Scott. The ballad "Jealousy" gets a great response. You can see hands going up in the air, waving from left to right on the rhythm of the music. Then follows one of the few moments tonight that she changes the setlist. "Over You" is being replaced by "Crashing Down". Her reason for this is that she knows that Holland always appreciates her darker songs. She also lets us know that she feels that only the people in Holland and up in Denmark like her.
The whole band plays "LA Song" and the crowd fanatically sings along. Over half of the song, after the sentence "I'm out of my pain", someone in the audience screams:"Yeah right!". It makes Beth giggle and stop the song for a second. Then she moves on with: "So I'm going back to LA". The lyrics to the brand new song "Sauce" have still not been finished but Beth loves playing it. "I don't know what it's going to be like tonight, I hope that it's alright with you?", she says. The fans scream positively. Beth shortly mingles in the crowd. "Face Forward" is played and the fans clap their hands high above their heads. "One Eyed Chicken"Â also got a great reaction tonight.
The well known single "Good As It Gets" is being played in Leeuwarden. One of the female fans is trying her best to get a picture of the guitar player with her cell phone. Tom as usual looks very relaxed and plays with a big smile on his face. Todd is prominently good tonight. Both gentlemen leave the stage when Beth and Jon start playing "Leave The Light On". Lighters are held up to support the beautiful atmosphere during this song. The two band members come back for an amazing entry and add their touch to this great song. What a goose bump moment tonight. Beth and band leave the stage after telling the fans who much fun she has had.
The lights go out and the audience claps and screams for more. After communicating that Beth will play at the Paradiso on New Year's Eve, the singer returns on stage and says: "God, I hope I remember this". Quickly it turns out that she is talking about "Sky Full Of Clover". The 'old' fans seem to be really happy that she put this song on tonight's setlist. But also the 'new' fans seem to appreciate the song. She ends the encore with "Waterfalls". Beth and the guys gather in the middle of the stage to take a bow and then they leave the stage for the second time.
The fans keep calling her: "Please come back!". You would think that after being sick she would not come back a second time. Apparently the wonderful feeling she has been having tonight concurs and she sits down behind her piano. While she plays the first notes of the unreleased but very beautiful "Rise Again", she asks Jon Nichols to come back. She does not want to play the song alone. He comes back and sits down on a barstool while Peder hands him the acoustic guitar. Beth stops playing the song because she mixes up the words. It's been so long since she played it. Then she goes on, which results in a lot of clapping. Just as she has been doing with a couple of other songs tonight she keeps adding some lyrics. It is evident that Beth is having an extremely good time and enjoying the lesser known song. "Rise Again" is only official release is a small part in the Rockumentary on the dvd "Live At Paradiso". What a wonderful end of this beautiful night which lasted for about eighty-five minutes.

Outside it's cold and windy and Beth fans hurry to get inside the venue. It's not very crowded yet, when the support act starts. Soon after the support act ends, Scott comes on stage to prepare for the show. The people in front row already have a sneak peek at the setlist. By the look on their faces you can tell this will be a great show.
And indeed, Beth surprises the audience by starting with a band version of "Hiding Under Water". It's a classic opener for the people that have attended earlier concerts. After this song a whole bunch of "Screaming For My Supper" songs were to follow: "Delicious Surprise", "G.O.P (Good Ole People)", "Just A Little Hole", "L.A. Song" and "Skin". Right before going into "G.O.P." Beth says she wants to be closer to the audience. Usually this means she will walk into them, but this time she only removes the sound boxes in front of her. When she sits back at the piano, she receives a letter from two small girls in the audience. Beth is touched the words in the letter and thanks them.
"Just A Little Hole" now has a longer intro and at the ending she repeats the line "Just a little hole, something for the soul" a few times. The fans that attend a lot of concerts recognize this song as a live rarity, but the overall audience doesn't seem to be very into the song. They get excited though when the band plays the first lines of "L.A. Song", with Jon playing his acoustic guitar. This gives the version a semi-acoustic feeling to this song.
"It's been a while since I have played this next song", Beth says and leads into "Skin". Unfortunately, "Skin" this time is not as intimate and fragile as the solo version but sounds more like a bombastic band version. The sound of the band tonight in the venue is a bit too loud; they sound rushed and Beth's voice echoes a lot at times.
On the other hand, the blues version of "Broken & Ugly" sounds amazing and might even be the best version so far, slow and sexy. Beth then starts telling the "Morocco" anecdote but Jon has to stop her as they are supposed to play "Is That Too Much To Ask". "Oh sorry, I am not that professional", Beth explains to the audience which sounded funny. The song sounds more funky with the stronger bass sound tonight.
The next song is a little bit hard to introduce as Beth is not allowed to cuss. "Catalina" is also known as "Fuck Morocco". This song and "Waterfalls" are not on the official setlist but are good choices as these are some up-tempo songs. Someone from the audience throws a white tank top at her with "Wanted: George Bush" on it. Beth seemed to like it a lot and broke out and played "Sick". Tonight, Todd's drum solo during this song is not as long as usual.
Scott comes out and leaves a note on her piano saying that there is time for just one song. This becomes "One Eyed Chicken". Then they decided to slip in another song and the audience is pleased to get the cover "Soulshine" as well. As with "Skin" earlier in the evening, this song loses some of its intimacy to the slick band version that it has become. Beth tries very hard and sings her heart out, but you can tell she is having trouble to sing sometimes and to make herself heard through all the sounds of the band.
This becomes clear when you hear it to the solo version of "At The Bottom" that Beth performs in the encore. The song sounds very personal and touching. The serious faces disappear for a small moment when Beth makes a small mistake and says "Oops!". The last song of the evening is no surprise, "Good As It Gets". Among the songs on the official setlist but not played are "Jealousy","Leave The Light On" and "Immortal", but they will have to wait until next time.

Trouble | |
Tonight it is time for a concert in the east of Holland. This was one of the two shows that had not been sold out weeks before the show. However, the sign "sold out" could be placed at the box office today. When the doors open at 7.30 pm, a group of fans is already waiting in the dark and the cold. A couple run fans straight to the stage, while others hang up their coats and check out the merchandise stand.
About 45 minutes later, a small dark-haired woman walks on stage. She grabs her acoustic guitar and introduces herself as Tracey Curtis. She has never played outside the UK before. As usual during support acts people are talking. But especially in the front of the stage you can see some people moving to the rythm and listening to the songs and stories from this affectionate singer. When she announces her last song you can hear some screaming. It is not very nice, but when she is finished she gets a warm applause from the audience.
The radio is turned on and the fans know that it won't be long until the show they came for will begin. When the music and lights are turned off and Scott Guetzkow walks on stage, the crowd begins to scream. Dressed in a purple top and blue jeans Beth walks on stage and sits down behind her piano. At the same time the band members take their places and start playing the beautiful "Easy".
Directly followed by "Lifts You Up"Â, which is about "living life and feeling fucking good about it". The first sentence, "Hold on to what you believe" is added during the live performance and the audience seems ready for this happy song. "Bottle Of Jesus"Â is played without introduction.
After that they play "Heaven Look Down" for the first time during the Dutch part of this fall tour. This song is from the latest record "37 Days". Next is the brand new "Sauce". Beth explains that the lyrics are not finished yet and that she doesn't even know what the song is about, but "It feels good like fucking". The crowd does not seem to mind and enjoys the first rock song of this set.
Apparently Beth is having a good time, because she changes the setlist and "Get Your Shit Together" flows out from her lungs. As she has done numerous times before, Beth slides off the stage for the first time during this Dutch tour and disappears into the masses. She then shows up on the fences of the sound guy in the front of the house. Cameras are flashing from all sides to capture this moment. During the last tones of this song Beth enters the stage again.
The acoustic guitars are handed to Beth and Jon and the band lets us enjoy the new version of "Broken & Ugly". The fans call this the "bluesy version", while Beth herself calls it "heroiny" and the band describes it as "swampy blues". It doesn't matter what you call it though, it just sounds really good!
The song "By Her" has not appeared on the setlists for a while and comes as a delicious surprise. The acoustic guitars stay out a little longer, because Beth wants to play the brand new song "Catalina". She asks if anyone has ever been to Morocco and if they had fun there. She did not last more than 26 hours in Tangers. After taking the ferry back to Spain, she kissed the ground. This experience has inspired her to write "Catalina", a song the funny singer calls "Fuck Morocco" when she is on stage.
On stage Beth and band discuss what song they should play next. One man in the crowd takes advantage of the silence and asks a question: "Beth, how are you doing?". She answers that she is doing fine and asks him the same question. After which the band starts playing the unreleased, but loved "Say My Name". After this song Beth asks if anyone has a request. Several songs are being called and one of them is "Blame The Moon". Beth apologizes for not knowing it anymore and promises that she will rehearse it.
She also hears "Hiding Under Water" and decides that she will play that song. Drummer Todd and bass player Tom leave the stage, while Beth plays the song on piano with Jon on electric guitar. After the sentence "You say it doesn't matter" Beth stops singing for a second. Beth seems to have lost the lyrics and looks aside. Luckily the words come back to her really quick and the continue the song. At the end the two gentlemen return on stage and the four of them end the song beautifully.
Loud applause follows and Tom walks up to Beth and whispers something in her ear. Then she looks at the crowd and sadly says: "What? We can only do one more song? No! I don't want to go, yet. We have a day off tomorrow. I want to stay!"Â. She starts playing the ballad "Jealousy"Â and shows that she really wants to stay by playing one more song off the new cd "37 Days", titled "Good As It Gets". The audience sings along the song from beginning until end. You can see them dancing and enjoying the song. Obviously, they have heard it many times before. Beth and band thank the fans and disappear from the stage for a little while, while the audience screams for more.
Fairly quickly all four of them return for an encore and Beth announces the next song with the words: "I dedicate the next song to Mr. George W. Fuckhead!". "Face Forward" is received wonderfully. After his heavy song Beth takes a seat behind her piano and starts playing a very beloved song "Leave The Light On". The song is recognizes immediately and the fans sing along to every word. A few cell phones and lighters are being held up to support the song. Then "L.A. Song" is played by the whole band which pleases the audience a lot. Even the bartenders can't stop singing.
The very last song of this evening is titled "Trouble". Everyone enjoys this unreleased song and some of the fans even know the lyrics. Beth enjoys the show very much and even plays the last part of the song standing behind the piano. After introducing the band one more time and thanking the audience for a wonderful evening it is finally time to end the show: "Scotty is making us leave, so blame him. We had such a great time. Thanks! We love you!"

Paradiso is the first sold out show of this Dutch fall tour. It is still the favourite venue for a lot of Beth Hart fans. You will understand this if you have been there before or if you have watched the Live At Paradiso DVD. Beth didn't keep her audience waiting for long and started the show early. She tells to be happy to be back in her favourite venue. That she feels at home at Paradiso and that shows when you look at tonight's setlist. There are kicking rock songs but also a place for the more intimate and personal songs like "Mama" and "At The Bottom". "I keep fucking up this song when playing live, I don't know why", she tells the audience who didn't notice this at all. It's extremely quiet during this song about a difficult time in her life.
The show starts very positive with upbeat band songs like "World Without You", "Delicious Surprise" and "Lifts You Up". Just like the show in Haarlem earlier this week. The show starts to get political when Beth introduces the next song: "I had a dream", she starts. "I wish I could take president Bush on a boot camp and kick his ass!". This is what the song "Face Forward Son" is about and Beth and the band nailed it. The song seems to get better and harder, the instrumental part is improved a great amount during the tour. This is why so many fans keep coming to her shows, because the songs sound different every time and some of them will have new versions. This is also the case with "Broken & Ugly". One of the outstanding rock songs from the previous album which now has a new bluesy sound. The audience is pleasantly surprised.
Then it's time for an anecdote. "Who has ever been to Morocco and did not like it? I do not want to offend anyone who is from there but it was just for 26 hours and I find that place so depressing". The ferry on the way back was called Catalina and I wrote this song. It's called "Fuck Morocco!". The official title of this song is "Catalina" but in the last line she sings: "This is not Chicago, so fuck Morocco". After this new song it is time for a classic: "I know you know this", says Beth. The audience recognizes "Monkey Back" immediately and is getting nuts. This is getting the biggest response of the night so far. After "Sauce", it is already time to leave the stage. Time flies too fast when you are having fun.
The tour manager informs the audience of the New Year's Eve show in Paradiso and asks if they want to hear more. Then Beth and band return to perform their popular singles "Leave The Light On" and "Good As It Gets". After these songs it seems if the show is over but then they start "Waterfalls" from the new record. Beth gives all she has during this 8-minute live version. She receives an enormous well-deserved applause afterwards that lasted for almost 10 minutes. Of course the audience is hoping for Beth and band to come back for more, but with so many shows to go it is not wise to come back. She has to protect her voice to be ready for the weekend shows. The audience surely will leave Paradiso happy and satisfied as this was just another great show with a lot of diversity in songs.

A few minutes before the doors open, a lot of people are waiting outside the venue. The show has been sold out for weeks now. Although there is just a small door to go through, the people are still relaxed which is also typical for the rest of the night.
The Dutch singer Wies is the opening act. She has a great voice and is very charismatic but the music is a little bit too quiet for most Beth fans. The audience is ready for Beth and wants to rock. Very soon Todd appears on stage and start kicking the drums big time. Then Beth and band show up and they perform a strong "Face Forward Son". "Delicious Surprise" follows and sounds loud as well.
Then it's time for a ballad. "Mama" had become a regular song during the last tours, but it has been a while since she has performed it here so it was a pleasant surprise. The song goes out to her mother because she loves her so much, but also hates her sometimes because she is afraid she will become like her. This sounded familiar to some people in the audience (laughing).
The setlist is very nice; not too soft and some familiar band songs have new arrangements, like "Broken & Ugly". This time it sounds like a blues song with Jon and Beth on the acoustic guitar. They play a lot of new songs which didn't show up on the new album "37 Days". "Say My Name", "Trouble", "Catalina" and "Sauce" are not that well known yet as the last two are Dutch tour debuts. Both songs got introduced Beth-style. "Catalina" is written in Morocco. "That place is so depressing your brain blows up. The next song is called Fuck Morocco!". Beth and Jon play acoustic guitar and are accompanied by the band. The refrain "Sail away Catalina, woohoohoo" sounds very catchy.
Beth introduces "Sauce" as a new song with unfinished lyrics. She likes to perform those because then the audience doesn't know it when she fucks up. "One Eyed Chicken" starts with a tragic story. Beth's uncle had a chicken with just one eye and Beth killed it by accident. He also has a two-legged dog. Therefore she wanted to dedicate the next song to her uncle. There is a short silence but then she starts laughing and says "You guys know I'm fucking with you, right?".
"Jealousy", played with the band, is already an audience favourite. After a big applause Scott comes on stage to give her a big hug. She smiles and says that she loves him very much and he is a good man (and makes a 'he has a big cock' gesture with her hands). "Over You" is another love themed song and the next single.
Todd kicked ass with a drum solo in "Sick". After this last song the tour manager Jef comes on stage to announce the New Year's Eve show in Paradiso Amsterdam. Tickets have already gone on sale. Beth and band return for an encore: "Good As It Gets" and "Trouble". They followed the setlist exactly, except for the last song. Beth decided to change "Leave The Light On" for a stunning version of "Crashing Down". A perfect choice to end this show!

Thirty minutes before the show starts, a small group of fans is already waiting outside. Beth has never performed in P60 before. The ticket says "CD presentation 37 Days". The fans are wondering what this means; will this be a full show, will she only play new songs or will this perhaps be more like a storytelling concert?
The first half of the show is mostly songs from the albums Screaming For My Supper (1999) and Leave The Light On (2004). Beth and Jon Nichols start with acoustic versions of By Her and Delicious Surprise. At first the audience is a little bit reserved, maybe they expected songs from the new album. But they get very enthusiastic when Beth starts playing L.A. Song and the new single Good As It Gets. They start singing along and are really into it, except for… Beth. After a few lines she forgets her lyrics and asks the band to start all over. This is typically Beth; spontaneous and a little bit nervous. But that is why the audience loves her.
At the very end of Bottle Of Jesus, Beth loses her voice a little, but then she does the "Heeyey" again which makes the audience laugh. The show is very up-tempo with songs like Broken & Ugly. After Jon's guitar solo Beth decides to walk into the crowd. Her husband, Scott, looks after her from the stage with a flashlight in his hand.
"Sick is dedicated to dickhead Bush!", says Beth. The idea that President Bush wants even more money for war makes her sick. The next song Face Forward Son is also about Bush but with deeper lyrics.
Some people are having an argument in front of Beth's piano. Beth asks them to give each other a kiss and a hug and to stop fighting. She starts playing the next song: One Eyed Chicken, which is a really good live song. After Leave The Light On they leave the stage. The night is going too fast.
As always, Beth comes back for more. She starts the encore with one of the most personal songs from the new album, At The Bottom. According to Beth she fucked up this song during the radio show That's Live! She is going to try it again without making any mistakes. The song sounds very moving and the audience listens quietly.
Another great live song is the unreleased Trouble, which is played with the band. Although this is the first time they perform this song for a big audience in Holland the audience seems to like it very much and was even singing a bit along already.
She didn't come to make trouble and she didn't, that's for sure!

Learning To Live | |
Just like the day before in Kolding, Beth Hart opened this concert with the beautiful Hiding Under Water acoustically with her guitar player Jon Nichols. The only difference this time was that it was not raining when the show started. It had been raining earlier that day, but the mud in the front near the fences did not stop the fans. The crowd was a little quieter then the day before, but that did not hinder Beth at all. The band came in halfway through the song and they transitioned into Lifts You Up. This song draws any crowd in and puts them in the right feel of the concert. This was followed by Delicious Surprise. In the intro Beth sang "Do you feel all right?" a few times, to which the crowd responded loudly saying "Yeah!". During this up-tempo song Beth walked down the stairs, off the stage, and up to the fences bringing herself closer to audience. As stood singing, many fans did not hesitate a single moment and reached out to touch Beth, who allowed it willingly.
When she got back on stage she sat down on the edge and started singing Get Your Shit Together. After Beth walked back to her keyboard from where she asked the audience if they ever watched television and if they too noticed that there is always so much bad news on there. Then she started playing Heaven Look Down, directly followed by LA Song with just herself and Jon Nichols. Halfway through the band came in, which was a big goose bumps moment, and the crowd sang along to this big hit. One Eyed Chicken was next on their set list. This is most likely one of the most eye catching songs when you look at the song titles off Beth's new album, 37 Days.
After sitting long enough, Beth stood to sing a very fast moving song called Face Forward. She told the story again about her having a dream about being a drill sergeant with Bush as her bitch. This time she added: "I'd like to kick the shit out of him, so this song goes out to this motherfucker".
She apparently liked doing some high energy songs, because the next song on the set list was Broken & Ugly. Wanting to experience the crowd up close and personal again, Beth left the stage again and got close to the fans. The bass player, Tom Lilly, did not have the opportunity to play his killer solo, as he often does during this song. The limited playtime on festivals is probably part of why that did not happen.
After this song Beth and her band waved the audience goodbye and they left the stage. But not for long, because Beth could not have ended her show without playing her new single. The four musketeers came back on stage for the encore and started off with Good As It Gets. Apparently the single does well on Danish radio, because the crowd sang along well. This came in handy, because Beth herself forgot a couple of words. Also her past number 1 hit could not be forgotten this afternoon. So the last song for today was Learning To Live, which got great response from the audience and they sang along loudly. This was one of the songs the crowd seemed to particularly like. After Beth had introduced her band she said goodbye to the crowd and they all left the stage for the last time. As you might have noticed the set list was almost the same as the day before, which is something Beth does not do a lot. She thought that this set worked really well, but she also said that they would change it again for the next show because otherwise it would get boring.

Beth entered the stage with her guitar player, Jon Nichols and together they opened the concert by playing the beautiful Hiding Under Water acoustically. This song is a strong opener which she has chosen before, especially when the rest of the band joins in just after Beth's acapella part, which brings big goose bumps to everyone. Without many words, which is unusual for Beth, she went on to play Lifts You Up. If you had any doubt about the crowd being in the mood, you would know for sure when Beth walked to the centre of the stage and started to sing Delicious Surprise. The crowd danced as if they did not feel any of the rain that was pouring down since 5 minutes before the show started. When Beth asked "Who needs to get their shit together?" everybody knew it was time to rock! If you have ever been to a Beth Hart concert before you will know that she often exchanges the stage for a walk through the crowd. You could also see Scott, who knows his wife very well, walk to the side of the stage as preparation. Beth probably did not want to risk getting a cold and decided not to go out into the crowd in the rain.
She walked back to her keyboard from where she asked the audience if they ever watched television and if they too noticed that there is always so much bad news on there. She explained that the next song she would play, Heaven Look Down, off her new album 37 Days, was about just that. Despite that the cd had only been for sale at the merchandise stands during the last 5 Green concerts, lots of people in the front were singing along to this song. The next song she played was the amazing One Eyed Chicken, which can also be found on her new album. As an introduction, Beth told the crowd that she has a neighbour who owns a one eyed chicken and he walks him every day on a leash. He also is the owner of a two legged dog named Bobby-Bobby.
Next she played her big hit from 1999, LA Song, to which a lot of people loudly sang along. After that she felt it was time for some rocking, which is also fun for drummer Todd Wolf, and let loose with Face Forward. This is a new song that she dedicated to George W. Bush Jr. as she does with G.O.P. every time she plays that. Only this time the story was a little different. She said that she has a dream of being a drill sergeant for only one day with Bush as her bitch. Of course the crowd started screaming in agreement. Say My Name followed quickly after that and recieved great response. This is one of the newer songs that had not been recorded for the new album, 37 Days. It was obvious that the fans were thrilled that she played this amazing song.
Beth decided to stray from the prewritten set list, as she normally does and asked the audience. Different songs ideas were screamed to Beth and one of them was Skin, which she and the band decided they would play next. After this impressive song, from the album Screamin' For My Supper, Beth and her band left the stage, but not for long. They returned fairly quickly for the encore and started it with the new single Good As It Gets. The crowd clapped their hands and danced in the rain. The last song this afternoon was the number 1 hit from the album Leave The Light On titled Learning To Live. She could not have left the stage without playing this song. The crowd sang along like their life depended on it, even the security people could not keep their lips still from singing. The arrangement in the intro had been changed a little bit. Drummer Todd Wolf started the song and bass player Tom Lilly followed. Then guitar player Jon Nichols added his acoustic guitar to the mix which changed the vibe of the song a bit. After Beth apologized for fucking up the end of the song, at least that is how she felt, she ended the show by thanking the crowd. The band came together in the centre of the stage to take a deep bow and after that they left the stage fulfilled.
